Pronounced BAH-kur-holt BAY-ir, Bákurholt Bær draws its name from the Icelandic pronunciation of our family’s surname, Buchholz, which means “Beech Wood” or “Beech Grove.” So the name literally translates "Beech Wood Farm". Very fitting because as we first walked this property, Rebekah took note of a stunning beech tree, and it felt like the perfect inspiration for our journey.

Our vision for Bákurholt Bær is to create a farmstead that transports you back in time to the Viking Age, where history comes alive and you become part of the story. To achieve this, we are modeling the architecture after early Scandinavian designs and cultivating a working farm with animals and organic gardens that honor techniques the Vikings may have used.

Beyond building a historically inspired homestead, we’re opening our doors to those who want to experience and learn. At Bákurholt Bær, you will be able to immerse yourself in hands-on classes covering skills like food preservation, woodworking, fiber arts, and more—all deeply rooted in respect for historical methods. For a truly immersive experience, we’ll even offer Viking Age-themed campsites and cabins where you can stay during a weekend class or event.
